“I want to think again of dangerous and noble things. I want to be light and frolicsome. I want to be improbable, beautiful and afraid of nothing, as though I had wings.” Mary Oliver

The“Luminista” movement empowers young women by encouraging them to be their true, beautiful, fierce selves! We do this through international travel, community engagement, mindful introspection, and surfing to subvert the dominant feminine culture of judgement, perfection and fear. How badass is that?

What makes us different is what makes us awesome:

We share. At Project Lumina we use “light” as a metaphor for all that is good, unique and special in us. Through our adventures we find new ways to discover our light. We believe that the opportunity to travel, to set foot on distant shores, to meet new people and discover different ways of living allows us to more readily uncover the beauty and grace that abides in us and more appreciate all that surrounds us.

We surf. Surfing allows us to delve into the depths of the ocean and into our own sense of courage and strength. Surfing can be scary and exhausting. Surfing, more importantly, is exhilarating and joyous. We will dive into all aspects of learning about surfing and about living. With its consistent surf break, Nicaragua is the ideal place to learn or polish up on your riding ability. No need for previous experience, our instructors will show you how to pop up, catch the waves, and ride them to the shore. Together we will learn to get through the rough break and ride with the waves, in the water and in life.

We serve. Service work is the practical application of projects designed to specifically address concerns in a community. Through hard work we participate in caring for the needs of others. Then, through thoughtful reflection we formulate larger problem solving strategies to further our actions beyond the moment of service and into lasting positive change. Through this process we become contributing citizens to our global community, we build character, and best of all, we have fun!
